AnimeBoston: Why Are We Here?
It’s over! The weekend at AnimeBoston with our Ubuntu booth was fun, but very draining. Every day we had to get to the Convention Center at 8:30am to make sure everything was set up again as we wanted to pack a certain amount of the expensive equipment away at night.
There was two laptops, one netbook and one giant screen showing effects and playing games. One laptop had Karmic, the other Lucid, the netbook was running Lucid UNR and the main screen was my laptop sitting under the table with my karmic install I use for development.
Danny took helm on the main screen with an external keyboard and mouse, showing a whole host of programs, videos and tools loaded at the same time with fancy compiz effects for switching windows, deasktops and painting fire and water. This really brought in the crowds and made people ask about how advanced Ubuntu had gotten.
We got a lot of attention from people who had never heard of Ubuntu before and people who had either used it already as their main system or knew a relative or friend who used it. Some needed a CD to upgrade their system, one man asked for a CD to upgrade his 5.04 install, so some people are obviously happy with older installs once they work.
We even got Firefox onto our booth:
We also were giving out copies of Ubunchu manga and flyers which detailed various important information about Ubuntu and the tools available on the platform. We also put them on the public flyers table and handed them out specifically to many artists in the Artist Ally. This was to make sure that artists were aware of all the great graphics tools available in the Free Software community. We got some great responses too, some free commissions out of it too.
The event was great over all and it wouldn’t have been possible without the volunteers that helped in all ways. From Vaughn helping us get boxes to the show, to Canonical’s system admin Sciri who got us some much needed Ubuntu Desktop CDs to replenish the insufficient number from shipit. A big thanks must got to Danny (DPic) for setting up the event, videoing and running the table with me and BillN1VUX for the transport back and assisting with the booth.
Online we must thank Systems76 for the laptops, the Linux Fund for managing donations, ProdPromo for the flyers and the ENTIRE Ubuntu community for all your donations! Your all so generous.

*beams happily*
Very glad this ended up well! Seems our prior detractors underestimated the openess of us Anime fans.
(you kind of have to be a little open if you need to continuously immerse yourself in two or more different cultures)
The Firefox-tan picture is priceless! ^^
I don’t know if you can see it in the pictures, but we thanked all our sponsors, including Pigux
Those posters came out looking great!
“AnimeBoston: Why Are We Here?”
Why did you guys set up a stall at an Anime convention to publicise Ubuntu? Is the Anime community more likely to want to use Ubuntu over the general public?
It’s more likey to understand the concept of “other”
Wow! Congrats sire!
