Free and Open Works
I was asked recently to help do some graphics for an Ubuntu community friend ausimage, the job was to encourage Creative Commons, FOSS and all other free and open community creators to show their support on their blogs and web pages. The project is called “Free and Open Works” and has three different concepts…
So I helped make the following graphics to help the branding:
You support the Free and Open community and their creations. Sharing your appreciation of quality works available in the community. Your patronship and support for the ideals of the commons encourages future works and further development.
You create and improve works for the Free and Open community. Sharing your talent or expertise with the community as a whole. Your works provide others with joy as well as a foundation to others to build derivative works.
You donate or commission works in the Free and Open community. Sharing your capital resources to provide tools and payment that bring about works in the community.
The wording is still fairly new, so any input on the whole idea is still very welcome and people interested should head over to the website: http://www.ausimage.us/CreativeCommons/HomePage
I’ll be adding both creator and benefactor images to my blog, since I both create Creative Commons and GPL works and commission works from artists which are then licensed under Creative Commons.
Download the svg source files here.

I have written my accompanying blog post on this topic. http://www.ausimage.us/Blog/20090724
It’s a fantastic idea! I add the image of supporter on my blog and I hope to add the image of developer one day. I have a question about it. The developer image can be insert only if he peolpe work in linux tool or also in other tool but free?
I like the creator and benefactor buttons. Their meanings are clear.
Supporter, however, is not obvious. Is it equivalent to ‘contributor’? To ‘fan’? To ‘user’? To ‘advocate’?
Any media from the Free and Open communities. so if you make graphics, videos, music, literature or software that is licensed copyleft or something similar.
User/Advocate, do you think there is better wording?
Ok … so I can only devel my idea and I can try to create a package for ubuntu
Package creation counts as development, so does translations, directing, documenting etc etc, all these things create.
Ok … before that I can write a developer plane … and after I can write source code. I don’t think to write a GUI in this moment … I can think to create in another version
Ok … yesterday night I start to write my tool
Question copyright has a similar idea, a badge showing that a particular work is being distributed in a way that the creator of the work endorses: http://questioncopyright.org/creator_endorsed
I like whats written about this over on TechExplorer… I need a badge saying that I’m dependant on FOW, perhaps a “FOW Dependant” badge? I like the idea.
Many thanks regarding the awsome article. I will keep an eye about your blog, i already added it to own list
