Can't Help Narratives

I watch cartoons, mostly because there are a few fun animated television shows that seem to be able to pull my attention. Even sometimes when they’re aimed at kids.

I think it’s because these shows are created by adults, they’re always putting in adult jokes; it’s like they can’t help themselves. Take the Powerpuff Girls, a fun show that has a very 70s “Beat-Alls” feel; in one episode they’re introducing a girl from next door to their father (The professor) one of the powerful girls says “We were created in an accident in the professors lab.” to which the new girl replies “My mummy and daddy says I was an accident too.”; a stunning adult joke considering the target audience.

But then there’s also a lot of adult cartoons, not just the ones coming out of Japan. And I just can’t resist a good narrative. There are shows which have kept me entertained from Studio Ghibli to Matt Groening to Aardman Studios. There is good stuff to watch in animation.

My good friend though, he’s not into it. I think it’s because we’re told to be adults and we’re given a very strict definition of what an adult is. No cartoons, no ice cream as main course and definitely no fart jokes. But avoiding care free and simple things is not what makes us adults. Being responsible, caring and socially mature; I think these are more important qualities than the rediculous social definitions I sometimes hear.
